Merlot is the underrated grape in the wine world. The "Rudy" of viticulture. That means Merlot's tend to be more affordable even though the quality of wine is still up there with its bigger and better known counterpart, the Cabernet Sauvignon.

Our Howell Mountain Merlot is perfect if you are looking for something that is neither too heavy or too pricey like a Cab Sav. It is has the deep rich flavors that you love out of a great red wine but with a softer, smoother finish so it doesn't sit heavy in the mouth or on the lips. That means you can enjoy a glass by itself, which we often do at the end of a day, or with a nice cheese burger.

TASTING NOTES — This gorgeous Howell Mountain Merlot contains beautiful dark fruit components of ripe blackberry and cassis, round yet structured tannins, focused acid with a backing of well-integrated oak. This wine will age gracefully over the next 8 to 10 years.

HARVEST NOTES — What began as a wet winter and spring, continued with rainfall into mid June. Few high heat events occurred at any point, but growers managed more open vine canopies to ensure sunlight, warmth and good air circulation around the grape clusters. Dry, sunny weather in the fall provided ideal ripening and picking conditions. The late, great weather produced wines that have excellent color and structured, elegant flavors.
